More Names and Greatest Range

Mountain lions hold the record for the animal with the most names at over 40!

Mountain lions are Colorado’s largest wildcat, with male cats weighing over 200 pounds, and are known as pumas, cougars, panthers, catamount, etc. The range of this wildcat extends from the Canadian Yukon down to the tip of South America! These excellent hunters are considered generalist ambush predators, eating almost anything they can catch. But their preferences include larger mammals such as deer or bighorn sheep to help fulfill their daily meat requirement of 8-10 pounds. When stalking and attacking their prey, they use their incredible leaping abilities to their advantage. Mountain lions are capable of making running leaps up to 40 feet long and standing jumps up to 15 feet high. Meow, that’s impressive!
