Moose - Colorado Wildlife Council

Colorado’s Largest Animal

A moose can weigh up to 1,200 pounds!

Moose are recognizable by their gigantic stature (with bulls standing at over six feet tall at the shoulder), weighing over half a ton, large ears, pronounced snout, and the flap of skin (bell) hanging from their throat. Bull moose antlers can spread up to six feet end to end, and can weigh up to 40 pounds full grown. Similar to the elk, moose can be heard in the forest making lots of different noises − bellows, grunts and barks. They are often spotted in water. They are born knowing how to swim and can close their nostrils to feed on underwater vegetation! The water helps them regulate their body temperature and protect their joints, and creates a safe space from predators. Bodies of water in the high country are great places to spot duck, duck and moose!
